Women’s business tailoring: where to start
A few well-fitting pieces that work together will do more than a rail of things that nearly fit.

Off-the-rack women’s tailoring is cut to a size chart, and most people sit between sizes somewhere: broader shoulders, a longer back, a different ratio between waist and hip. Made to measure removes that compromise. The trick is deciding what to have made first.
Start with a suit that splits
A jacket with matching trousers or a skirt is three outfits in one: worn together, the jacket over a dress, or the trousers with a blouse. Navy, charcoal, black or a quiet check keep it versatile. A brighter colour, like red, makes a statement suit that still works for meetings.

Then fill in around it
- A dress that works on its own and under the jacket.
- Two blouses in easy-care or easy-iron shirting if you travel for work.
- A second skirt or pair of trousers to double the combinations.
That is, more or less, what our Ladies Business Collection contains: a suit, a dress, a skirt and two blouses, for $313.
Decisions worth thinking about
Jacket length and buttoning
A single-button jacket with a defined waist is flattering on most people. Double-breasted is more formal and more structured. Length changes the proportion with trousers and skirts, so bring or wear what you’ll pair it with.
Trouser shape
Straight, wide or tapered, and at what rise. Wide-leg trousers are cooler in Bangkok’s heat.
Skirt length
Decide where the hem should fall with the shoes you’ll wear.
Bring a photo of a look you like, even if it’s from a magazine. It’s the fastest way to explain what you want.
At the fitting
Check the jacket across the shoulders and bust when buttoned, the sleeve length with your arms relaxed, and how the waist sits when you sit down. More on fittings.
